Why We Need to Talk About Men’s Mental Health

Mental health doesn’t discriminate, but society often does—especially when it comes to men.

While millions of men worldwide struggle with depression, anxiety, trauma, and stress, far too many suffer in silence. In fact, **1 in 10 men** experience anxiety or depression, but less than half seek treatment. **Over 6 million men** in the U.S. alone face depression each year, and yet asking for help is still seen by many as a sign of weakness. That dangerous mindset has deadly consequences.

**Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among men**, particularly those aged 25–34. In the U.S., men are **four times more likely to die by suicide** than women. For some, stigma, shame, and outdated expectations around masculinity make it difficult to open up. Instead of speaking out, many turn to harmful coping mechanisms such as alcohol or drug use—statistically, men are up to three times more likely to misuse substances than women.

We also can’t overlook the deep inequalities in mental health access. **Men from underserved communities**—including racially and economically marginalized groups—face unique cultural and systemic barriers that make support even harder to reach. These might include limited access to affordable care, lack of representation in the therapy field, or a cultural emphasis on emotional toughness over vulnerability.

But here’s the truth: **asking for help is strength**. Talking about your mental health, checking in with a friend, or even taking that first small step toward therapy can literally save a life—yours or someone else’s.

What You Can Do:

* Normalize conversations about mental health in your circles.
* Encourage the men in your life to speak up, and listen without judgment.
* Share resources and mental health hotlines.
* Advocate for culturally competent care and community-based support.

As part of our commitment to breaking the stigma around mental health, we proudly support Grace Period, a nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting mental wellness, equity, and emotional support services for underserved communities. Together, we can shift the narrative and create real change.

Let’s build a world where men are empowered to show up fully—mentally, emotionally, and unapologetically human.
